The mats have been reserved for a Judo competition. On Monday night we will be having our "First Monday of the month" dinner at the Dojo after training. Food will be Pizza, garlic bread and salad. It is expected that we will have approval from the University to also serve wine. Soft drink and fruit juice drinks will be available from the fridge. Actual cost of the meal will depend on how many people are able to participate but will not exceed $20. If for some reason you can not make it to training but wish to join us for pizza etc.afterwards please let me know by 7 pm on the night (I will have to ring to arrange delivery of the pizzas). My home number is 9383 2858 and mobile 0409089406. On Saturday 12 April we will be providing an "Introduction to Self Defence" at the Dojo for the International Students Society. It is scheduled from 10 am to 12 noon. It would be appreciated if some of our members could turn up to join in the practice with the International Students. Depending on numbers we may run our normal training format in tandem. This will have to be decided on the spot and at the time. Hope to see you at training; Self defence course; and/or Dinner. One course will be held at the Herb Graham Memorial Recreation Centre on Manning Road - about 2 Ks. East of the Freeway. The other will be in Nedlands - I don't know the venue. I am currently 5 weeks into this introductory course ( having dropped out from the short form course in December 2004 because of prostate surgery and work pressures ) and I do recommend it. I believe there are distinct health and strength benefits. Also you can continue to practise it, and benefit, into advanced years (70's; 80's). I do think, however, that it would take years of training before being "combat ready" with Tai Chi alone. How have you found learning Tai Chi so far? How has it benefited you in anyway? Do you enjoy learning from the Academy? We certainly try our best to help students get the most of out their training with us and help them to enjoy good results from it. If you agree, please do mention our upcoming courses to others who you think would benefit from learning Tai Chi with us also and invite them to come! Though the flyer only has the details of one of the courses, we actually have two new courses starting together, running in parallel, at two different locations and times. We hope that this will cater to more people in various suburbs. For more information feel free to contact me anytime by email or call me on 0406 274 381. Make Us Your Homepage Lifestyle Text Size Print Email RSS Find your chi with tai chi 1st April 2008, 7:00 WST People have used tai chi to strengthen the body and mind since the Ming dynasty. These days the only thing that?s changed is the number of afflictions the ancient martial art can treat. Depending on the style taught, tai chi uses between 24 and 124 basic movements to achieve coordination and balance through a ?meditation in movement?. The health benefits of tai chi have been well documented and include improvements in arthritis, migraines, bone degeneration, longevity, respiration, coronary care, digestion, stress, depression and weight loss. But experts warn the art must be practised correctly or not at all. Kit Po Wong, who has taught tai chi for nearly 40 years and runs the Academy of Chinese Martial Arts in Perth, agrees the preciseness of technique is crucial to boosting health and wellbeing. Dr Wong, 62, said movements should always be gentle, making the muscle exercise more natural. ?It?s not like basketball where the movements are jerky and you perspire heavily, it?s a dispersion of energy,? he said. ?When doing tai chi properly you should only sweat very lightly and the heart rate and blood temperature should always stay the same.? Dr Wong said the most important rules for effective tai chi were gentle movement and good posture with an erect head, upright body and extended chest. ?Basically, abdominal breathing can be developed and provide the opportunity for internal organs to be massaged,? he said. ?Two sessions of 30 minutes every day are ideal, but it?s not something that should be done with strict times, you need to be relaxed.? University of WA tai chi instructor Alex Hew also believes tai chi needed to be practised daily for health, peace of mind, intrinsic energy and equilibrium. ?The older I get the better my chi (energy) is stimulated and the spirit of vitality retained,? he said. A session done correctly should leave people feeling exhausted but exhilarated, said Mr Hew, who conducts regular seven-week courses for the UWA Sports Association. A recent study at the Tufts-New England Medical Centre in the United States found that long-term tai chi had positive effects on the promotion of balance control, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness and reduced the risk of falls among the elderly. The research also showed that tai chi had benefits for people with existing conditions, such as heart disease and high blood pressure. Another study from the University of California found that tai chi calmed the nervous system, reduced tension headaches, improved emotional balance and exercised the body without strain. Mr Wong said there was nothing miraculous about tai chi?s therapeutic properties. ?Gradually your breath becomes very smooth, you calm yourself down and it?s as though there is no air around you. This is a very important technique to replace negative thoughts.? Jenni Storey Have your say ads from Yahoo! Search Marketing: Lifestyle a.. Men's mag runs win-a-divorce competition b..
